Tips for Choosing The Perfect Wedding Cake

Getting married? Congratulations!

Guisachan House Restaurant is one of Kelowna’s premier wedding venues, so we’ve seen many happy couples pass through our doors. We know how much detail and planning goes into a wedding and we know how stressful it can be. That’s why we offer full-service wedding packages, so that you can spend more time focusing on your new marriage, and less time worrying about small wedding details.

Over the years, we’ve hosted a lot of weddings at our historic Kelowna venue, so we’re going to share a few pearls of wisdom that we’ve learned about choosing the perfect wedding cake!

Do Your Research

Don’t know what sort of wedding cake style you like? Jump online and see what appeals to you as a couple. Pinterest is a fantastic resource - you can even start a little board to keep track of the ones that you like. This is highly personal, so it pays to spend some time looking through your options.

If that sounds like more than you want to take on, consult with a reputable baker and ask them about the pros and cons of different styles. At Guisachan House, all of our cakes are made in-house by a master chef and we work with couples and their families to find the right fit for their wedding day.

You will also want to consider the location of your wedding. In Kelowna, the summer sun can be intense, so if you are planning on keeping your wedding cake outside or near a window, you will want to consider how your icing will hold up in the heat.

Be Yourself

When choosing your cake, pick something that genuinely appeals to you both. If you’d prefer a non-traditional style cake, go with that, and vice versa. It’s your wedding day, so pick something that fits with your personal taste and style.

Set a Realistic Budget

Wedding cakes can be expensive. Before you start emailing or calling around, decide how much you have available to spend on your cake. This will help to make sure you don’t spend more than you can afford.

You could also consider working with a wedding venue that offers wedding packages that include details like the cake. Guisachan House is a historic Kelowna wedding venue that offers all-inclusive wedding packages, so the price of your cake is included in one cost for the whole day.

The Number of Guests Determines the Size

Your cake should be tailored to the number of guests who are going to be enjoying a piece of it. If you’re having a small gathering of close family and friends, there’s little point splashing out on a humungous cake. On the other hand, if there are lots of people attending, you’re going to want to make sure there’s enough cake for everyone. It may sound silly, but people can get so caught up on the design and ensuring the cake has 5 tiers, that they overlook the fact that the cake is way too big for their needs.

Seek Out Value

To keep your wedding costs from adding up, it is important that you seek out value. If you’re on a tight budget, a good rule of thumb is to never spring for the cheapest or most expensive option, but to select a choice with a price point that’s somewhere in the middle. This will help you find more value and stretch your dollars a little further, without compromising on the overall vision for your wedding day.
